The re-designation of USAF aircraft in 1948 saw the P for Pursuit change to F for Fighter, resulting in the Mustang becoming a North American F-51D
During the Korean War, the famous Mustang of the Second World War traded its role as a day fighter to that of a ground attack aircraft, where it proved to be more effective than the early US jet designs. With significant advances in ground based anti-aircraft technology, the aircraft suffered heavily when operating at these extremely low altitudes.
